Bike New York Rail Trail Event 7/29/2007

Please post your thoughts, was the Millerton/Rail Trail event a success or not. I believe it is time to bring Sunday's events back to the Village. What are your thoughts?

I believe you are correct the event is wonderful for the Town as well as the Village but few merchants benifit from the large number of people who attend ever since the event staging area moved to the ballfield- we need to bring the traffice back to the Village- perhaps we close ooff a few side roads for the day so the merchants can benifit and participate.

Can you please tell me what is going on with the parking in this town-where do the merchants park and where do the rail trail folks park- I'm confused

In reference to Bill's comment: I would agree that to make the Bike New York event viable for Village businesses the staging area should be someplace within the Village. As it stands the event is so cyclist centric there is little spin-off business.

Re: Anonymous' comment: One important move the Town and Village boards could make would be to agree to well-placed signage directing Rail Trail users to designated parking along Century Boulevard. This would help relieve parking congestion within the Village and keep those ever-diminishing spaces freed up for Village businesses. In my opinion the Village merchants and businesses owners and employees who themselves park in prime spaces (especially on weekends) have little cause for complaint about parking when there is more than ample room for those owners and employees to park on Century Boulevard as well thereby giving parking preference to potential customers. Millerton is a very 'walkable' place so business owners and merchants should set the example by parking in less convenient areas and in time customers will see that walking a block or two isn't such a hardship!

I agree we can close off North Center Street, John's Street, perhaps South Center street making them parking lots as well as staging areas. We can have the merchants groups act as parking assistants as well as guides for all visitors.
Let us all take advantage of this once a year oportunity for all the merchants as well as the citizens of this fine town.
I think too much attention has been paid to the organizers of the Bike NY event- it is our Town- we need to be the focus of the days events- we are the reason they come to VISIT. Lets get some folks together to set this up for next years event.
